FISSURES
Fissures of the heel, also known as heel fissures or cracked heels, are splits or cracks in the skin of the heel, often caused by dryness, pressure, or thickened skin (calluses).
Appearance:
- Linear cracks or splits in the thick skin of the heel, sometimes shallow but may become deep.
- The surrounding skin is usually dry, rough, and may be thickened or yellowish.
- In severe cases, the fissures may bleed, become painful, or become infected.
Causes:
- Dry skin (xerosis)
- Prolonged standing, especially on hard floors
- Wearing open-backed shoes or sandals
- Obesity (increased pressure on heels)
- Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or athlete’s foot
- Diabetes or thyroid problems (can impair skin health)
Symptoms:
- Dryness and flaking of the skin
- Pain while walking or standing
- Bleeding or redness in severe cases
- Itching or burning sensation
Management:
- Regular moisturizing with thick emollients or heel balms (containing urea, salicylic acid, or lactic acid)
- Exfoliation to remove dead skin
- Wearing closed, cushioned footwear
- In severe cases: prescription ointments or treatment by a podiatrist
